If you are shopping and you wonder what brands are good:
Thoughts on the types of clothes you might be looking at for outdoor gear:
“base layers” – can be wool, polypropolane, or silk (sometimes parents hand these down)
Boots: The LL Bean brand of boots is good and you can find them there, and Sorrel is a good make as well
Outdoor cold weather gear:
LLBean snow gear is good – if you have layers so buy it big enough to put a couple of layers on underneath
Having some down in the snow suit for 2 – 5 year olds is great as they are outside longer- you can also dress them in layers and then a larger outer layer can go over thick pants and sweaters/lighter jacket
Waterproof
Grunden’s Gear is sold as water proof and it is but it doesn’t breath and is very uncomfortable after a while
Oaki is a great one piece suit and can go over snow gear as well
LLBean doesn’t do a good job in this department so you can stay away from them
Patagonia/REI/H&M have good rain gear
Mittens:
Getting the long mittens that go to the elbow are best – they stay on. Having waterproof shell over mittens doesn’t seem to work well. Having two or three pairs of mittens is best – you can find a lot of these in used clothing boxes and at our swaps.
